An internal combustion engine for recharging the batteries of an electric vehicle for local journeys has an electric output which is 80 to 95% lower than the max. output of the electric motors powered by the batteries. Preferably, the internal combustion engine is a diesel engine which can be powered by diesel fuel obtained from wastes conversion and is fitted with catalytic exhaust purification, super soundproofing, having a hot water jacket and two plate heat exchangers for the engine cooling system.
