A detection process for transformer cores can be applied whether or not core flow sensors are in use. Without core flow sensors, detection is based on the observation and evaluation of the winding voltage and/or current over a period of time, using a physical transformer model. Where core flow sensors are used, whether measuring coils fixed to the core or external unloaded coils,. observation and evaluation of the induced voltage over a time period before and during out-switching will determine flow and a transformer model is not necessary. By determining inductive flow, switching on can be free from current jolt.
