A method for determining the spatial distribution of the traffic volume in a mobile radio network

The method involves determining the spatial distribution of the traffic volume within a radio cell of a cellular mobile communications network, by using a test transmitter set up at a test location. Each mobile station which receives the test signal, measures and reports the reception level for an evaluation at a computer which examines the test location. The test location is determined as suitable for an implementation of a new base station, if the majority of the mobile stations receives the test signal strong enough. The radio cell is, first of all, divided into several segments which are respectively associated with nominal values, such as a nominal reception level, which were calculated by device of a network planning tool. After that measurements are determined for each mobile station (MS), which depend on the lengths of the radio paths. The segment in which the mobile station is momentarily located is determined through comparison of actual and nominal values, and a counter which indicates the traffic for this segment is increased.
