The method measures the impulse response or the transmission function of acoustic systems, and involves a measurement signal composed of a maximum periodic noise signal and a sinusoidal pilot tone. This is to enable any non-periodic time intervals of the transmission path to be detected and if necessary correct them. A pre-emphasised maximum periodic noise sequence can be one component of the measurement signal. After the actual measurement process the information received is first resolved into the two components of the signal by a digital or analogue filter, i.e. into the content of pilot tone and maximum periodic noise sequence.
