The method comprises: (a) heating the nonquenched and tempered steel to a temperature between 1150 and 1300 deg C in furnace (15) and hot-forging it to produce a forging (3); (b) keeping the temperature of the forging below 1000 deg C during its transport into a cooling chamber on a conveyor (1); and (c) cooling the forging, with the cooling rate controlled by a central unit (20) to maintain the temperature gradient at a target value while the forging passes through the cooling chamber. The installation includes a temperature sensor (16) at the exit from the furnace (16), as well as temperature sensors (4, 9, 12). The cooling system (17) is controlled by the central unit on the basis of signals received from the temperature sensors (4, 9, 12).
