Defective underground pipes (7) or shafts (8) which are not directly accessible to workers are repaired by a pig which passes through the pipe or shaft spraying a pasty substance coating (1) the pipe or shaft wall as it proceeds. The pasty substance may be either thrown at the wall by centrifugal force from a rotating discharge spray head, or may be sprayed on the walls by hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical power, preferably by compressed air (4). The inner pipe chamber may be maintained at an enhanced pressure (5) of 0.1 to 10 bar during paste application to force paste into the damaged surfaces and prevent the ingress of external water. The paste can be either held in a tank within the pig or supplied by an umbilical hose. The pig can move through the pipe either under its own power or is pulled through by a cable. During the paste application, inlet and outlet branches of the pipe under repair may be sealed off (6).
