The tone pick-up system has a base (2) fitted with a removable pick-up (1) and secured to the body of the string instrument, so that it is height adjustable. The electrical contact and mechanical fixing between the base and the pick-up is provided via a plug-in connection or sliding contacts. The pick-up may be fitted to the socket from the longitudinal side of the latter or from above, the socket providing a frame which holds the pick-up in the correct position relative to the instrument strings.
