Use of R(+)- alpha -liponic acid (I), R(-)-dihydroliponic acid (II) or their metabolites, salts, esters or amides for prodn. of medicaments for the following purposes is new: (1) treating chronic degenerative diseases of the CNS; (2) treating glucose metabolism disorders of the CNS; (3) improving glucose uptake and glucose metabolism in chronic degenerative diseases of the CNS; (4) improving glucose uptake and glucose metabolism in the therapy of age-related cerebral dysfunction and performance deficit; (5) preventing or slowing the progress of chronic degenerative diseases of the CNS; and (6) preventing or slowing the progress of age-related cerebral dysfunction and performance deficit. Also claimed are medicaments as above contg. vitamin E, vitamin C, NADH, NADPH and/or ubiquinones as additives or stabilisers.
