The heat loss reduction process has an additional oil heat exchanger (20) integrated into the lubrication system. This cools the higher-temp. oil returning to the sump from the cylinder walls, the pistons, the upper part of the crankcase and the crankshaft. The thermal energy thus recovered is transferred to the fresh oil being supplied via the oil pump (9) to the lubrication and cooling points. This reduces the heat loss to the environment, particularly in the vicinity of the crankcase and the sump (1). This also applies where the oil tank is outside the engine. The thermally active mass of the lubrication circuit is also reduced.
