PURPOSE:To reduce the probability of errorneous correction by selecting an error correction operation out of plural operations with different correction capability according to an index of a transmission line error rate. CONSTITUTION:A counter 46 counts number of codes in which the syndromes are not all 0, that is, the code number with the occurrence of an error for a prescribed time based on an output of a syndrome 0 discrimination circuit 44 and outputs the error rate information as a mode selection signal for the selection of the algorithm of error correction. A microprogram 48 is provided with plural program modules comprising different decoding algorithm and controls an error pattern calculation circuit 38 with a module selected by a mode selection signal from the counter 46. That is, the error correction is applied based on the optimum decoding algorithm in response to the current error rate of the transmission line. Thus the probability of errorneous correction is decreased.
