The waveguides (1, 2) have a scraped or unravelled region where they are tangential to the resonator (3) or alternatively the output waveguide may end at a point tangential with the resonator. The resonator is a silica microsphere and the fibres are fixed to it. The resonant frequency may be tuned. The path of the light which propagates to the surface may be disturbed to alter the phase; the resonator may be heated to change its refractive index and size; the input waveguide may send a supplementary light beam at another resonant frequency to give heating; the resonator may be mechanically deformed by the piezoelectric effect.
