The telephone banking system has a server at the bank and multiple terminals. The terminals have a reader to validate smart bank cards. Once the card has been validated, the terminal sends a reference number for the card to the server. The server checks the authorisation of this card. If the reference number is present in a first 'secure transfer' table which shows the card number as registered for remote telephone access, the server delivers the access code corresponding to the card reference. If the reference number is not in the first table the server checks a second table to identify the client associated with the card, identifies client contracts, selects one and delivers its access identifier.
