The method involves filming a grey reference card (10) with an 18% reflection index while the pictures are being taken. Conversion equipment is calibrated to ensure that a standard reproduction of the film pictures is obtained in the calibration mode. The reference pictures, including the card, are converted and a reference pixel (14) is chosen as the video picture. An equiluminance and equichrominance region (12') containing the reference pixel and surrounding pixels is defined and in free mode the operator adjusts the equipment to improve the image quality. Absolute values (18) are inserted into the video image in sampling mode and relative values (19) are inserted in free mode.
