A process for the re-generation of Zr catalysts which include chelates with beta -diketones ; tetra-alcoholate(s), Zr(OR1)4 (R1 = 1 - 6C alkyl) ; ZrO2 ; ZrO2 ; and ZrX4 (X = halogen), which is effected by the addition to the exhausted catalyst of 0.5 - 5 moles/mole of catalyst of at least one dopant selected from :- -a beta diketone of formula:- -R2, R3 = 1 - 8Calkyl or aryl(e.g.phenyl)possibly substituted ; -R4, R5 = H, 1 - 30C alkyl or aryl(e.g.phenyl) ; -R2 and R4 may be interconnected to form, with CO, an aliphatic or aromatic ring(with one or more nuclei); a beta -ketonic ester of formula :- -R6 = 1 - 8C alkyl or aryl (e.g.phenyl); R7, R8 = H, 1 - 30 C alkyl or aryl (e.g.phenyl); and R9 = 1 - 8C alkyl and a beta -hydroxyketone of formula:- R10, R11, R12, R13 and R14 = 1 - 30C alkyl, aryl, halogen or 1 - 30C alkoxy. Also claimed, is the preparation of (meth)acrylates using a Zr catalyst re-generated by use of a dopant of formula R2COCR4R5COR3 (I), R6COCR7R8COOR9 (II) or (III).
