The lamp includes the tube which has an electrode at each end connected to the circuit (5) which initiates the discharge and is housed in a base (11) under a transparent cover. The outer face (10) of the base has a groove (12) extending throughout the length of its axis (13) and wide enough to contain both wires of the supply. The groove defines two regions (14,15) of different depth within the base, where the deeper region (15) accommodates the most bulky circuit components. Two passages (16) are provided in the bed of the groove for insulation of conductive points (17) which pierce the respective wires when the lamp is assembled.
