Items to be cooled are placed at the tubes (1,1') cold point heat-exchangers (2,2'). Heat extracted is transferred out at the warm point exchangers (3,3'). Cold points are connected via regenerators (4,4') to gas pressure pulse generators (7,7'), operating in mutual antiphase. The warm points are connected to reservoirs (5,5'), and the regenerators are thermally coupled. This basic layout is developed into a more compact configuration, with piezo-electrically controlled membranes, dividing a single pulse generator cavity, delivering alternate pulses in phase opposition. The two cold points adjoin each other, forming a single cooling area, and the reservoirs are eliminated, the warm points being directly interconnected.
