The device or card stores in non-volatile memory, bankers card identification data, and authorises transmission of the data to a central site (SO) where cards can be cancelled, via an acceptable terminal (TA), which is equipped with a link-up (LC) between the cancelling card (CO) and the central cancellation site (SO) over a communication network (RB,RT,RN). The cancellation card (CO) can be activated from a public phone booth, automatic teller machines, from a PC over the Internet.
