Monitoring system for use by medical patient to enable broadcast of alarm

The system includes a sensor providing a parameter (P) which measures an aspect of the patient's health, such as the pulse rate. This parameter is fed to a measuring circuit (2) which transforms the parameter into a signal (S1), applied to a processing circuit (3). The portable controller, within which this is mounted, may be worn in a bracelet about the patient's wrist. This circuit, which may be a comparator, determines whether the value is within the normal range or is abnormal. If an abnormal condition is detected, a message transmission circuit (4) is activated to produce either a coded voice signal, or an electromagnetic alarm signal. The alarm signal may be detected by a remote receiver (6) and possibly re-transmitted to a surveillance device (8) by a telephone transmitter (7).
