Railway network monitoring system for rail track fault detection

The monitoring system operates over a segment of a railway network (10) and includes a central unit (18) connected to the rail tracks (12,14) and a number of current measuring devices (19a-e). These devices are placed along the railway and grouped in pairs. A voltage generator (20) is provided in the central unit to generate a variable frequency signal (S) which is applied to the rails. The data generated by the current measuring devices are collected by an emitter/receiver module (22).
