An image display device, particularly a head mounted stereoscopic display device, which presents an environmental image 12,162 (pair of illuminated slides) disposed at the periphery of an enlarged main image 14,163 (pair of LCDs) is provided with environmental sound presenting means 165 for selectively presenting a suitable environmental sound. The audio signal of the main image is synthesised with the environmental sound signal or output separately. The environmental sound may be selected in response to the audio signal of the main image. Surround sound may be detected and mixed with the environmental sound and audio signal sound. The display device may also include image changing means for varying the environmental image according to circumstances detected by circumstances detecting means which detects operating conditions of the display device or of the outside environment.
