A pressure-wave supercharger, also known as a pressure exchanger, for an i.c. engine comprises a rotor 30 formed from a flywheel of an engine, which is attached to and rotatable about a crankshaft, an exhaust tube 38 for introducing exhaust gas, an ambient air inlet tube 50, a tube 52 leading to the engine air intake and a tube 58 for expelling the exhaust gas to the atmosphere. The flywheel 38 has cells or channels (figure 4) formed within it for receiving the inlet air and exhaust air. The exhaust air compresses the inlet air directly in the cells and feeds the compressed inlet air through the inlet air tube 52 to the engine.
