Facsimile transmission coding including termination and dummy codes

In a facsimile signal coding system wherein the image data to be encoded includes a plurality of information source symbols, the total number of which is not known prior to commencement of coding, and within which a predetermined sequence of such symbols occurs, a said predetermined sequence is added at the end of the image data together with a termination symbol, and a dummy symbol is added to the other predetermined sequence or sequences. The termination symbol is different from the dummy symbol and when a termination symbol following a predetermined sequence is detected at a decoder decoding is terminated, whereas when a dummy symbol following a predetermined sequence is detected at a decoder decoding is continued. The predetermined sequence is preferably also transmitted prior to encoding the plurality of information source symbols.
