An apparatus for intravenous administration of solutions of cell- free hemoglobin is disclosed. The apparatus includes a solution of cell- free hemoglobin in fluid connection with a housing having an inlet and an outlet through which the solution of cell-free hemoglobin flows and a nitroxide bound to a matrix is contained within the housing to alleviate oxygen toxicity to the cell-free hemoglobins.
