PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface-treating agent excellent in antimicrobial properties, capable of imparting the long-lasting antimicrobial properties to various materials, and the subject oligomers useful as an antimicrobial agent usable for a resin composition, by allowing the surface-treating agent or the oligomers to have a specific structure. ;SOLUTION: The objective oligomers have a structure of formula I [R1 and R2 are each H or methyl; R3 to R5 are each a1-10C alkyl or an alkoxy; A is an alkylene; R6 to R8 are each a 1-18C alkyl; X is a halogen; (n) is l-100; the molar ratio of (a):(b) is (1:99)-(99:1)]. The oligomers are obtained by reacting a phosphonium salt having a (meth)acryl group of formula II [e.g. tri-n-butyl(2- acryloyloxyethyl)phosphonium chloride] with a silane compound having vinyl group of formula III (e.g. trimethoxyvinylsilane) in the presence of a polymerization initiator (e.g. azobisisobutyronitrile).;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
