A novel 10 - substituted 10h phenothiazines used as catalysts for regioselective chlorination of aromatic hydrocarbons in combination with Ruiz acid. The 10h phenothiazine-10-carboxylic acid phenyl ester represented by the following formula (I) can be used as a catalyst for regioselective nucleation of aromatic hydrocarbons in combination with Ruiz acid. This catalyst has the advantage that the position selectivity is not lowered even if nuclear chlorination is carried out at a reaction temperature exceeding 45.degree.
