DUAL INFLAT OR DEVICE INCLUDING PYROTECHNIC INFLATOR

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device comprising two inflators selectively used for expanding an air bag. ;SOLUTION: Two inflators comprise a micro hybrid inflator 24 and a pyrotechnic inflator 28. The micro hybrid inflator 24 contains a pressurized medium having oxygen contributing the inflating gas filling an expansible matter. Both the inflators 24, 28 contain a rich fuel type gas generating material. When both the inflators 24, 28 of this dual inflator device are operated, the present oxygen is used for the further combustion of the combustion product from the pyrotechnic inflator 28 having the rich-fuel type gas generating material. Each of the inflators 24, 28 is operated depending on whether the collision of a vehicle leading to the operation of an air bag is a low impact or a high impact. The two inflators 24, 28 can be mounted on a support structure in a desired arrangement of the inflators in order to minimize the section and reduce the space used by the inflators.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
