PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To directly and efficiently obtain the subject compound that is useful as a synthetic intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals by coupling a specific metalla cyclopentadiene, a metal salt, and bis(halomethyl) aromatic compound. ;SOLUTION: (A) A metalla cyclopentadiene of formula I (R1-R4 are each H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aromatic group, or the like; M is a transition metal, preferably a transition metal in the group 4 of the periodic table such as zirconium; L is a ligand; n is an integer of 0-4), (B) a metal salt such as copper chloride, copper bromide or the like and (C) a bis(halomethyl) aromatic compound of formula II or formula III (R5-R14 are idnependently same as R1; X1-X4 are independently a halogen) are allowed to react with each other to produce (D) an eight-membered or nine-membered ring compound. The compound of component A is prepared by reaction of the corresponding transition metal compound with an acetylene and the amount of the compound used here is preferably 0.5-10 equivalents based on the component C.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
