PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide ambiguous symbol column retrieving method for efficiently executing symbol column retrieval by using the transposition information of a symbol column to be retrieved. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a transposition information storing part 1c for storing the appearing position of each symbol of a symbol column to be retrieved, transposition information preparing part 1b for extracting the appearing position of each symbol column to be retrieved, and storing it in a transposition information string part, transposition information obtaining part 1e for obtaining the transposition information of the same symbol as a symbol included in a retrieval symbol column from the transposition information storing part 1c, and collation processing part 1i for operating an arithmetic processing for the obtained transposition information, and outputting the position of a retrieval symbol column included in the symbol column to be retrieved. This collation processing part 1i operates ambigous retrieval for permitting the insertion/deletion/transposition of a symbol within the preliminary designated number of times.
