PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure actual speed of an armature, by detecting a change of an operating force of a return spring at least during a part of armature motion, and leading out position and/or speed of motion of the armature every time from the change by using a control device. ;SOLUTION: In accordance with a supplied control signal 11, a current is supplied to a coil 12 of an electromagnet 2 via this electronic control device 10. When power is supplied, a magnetic field is generated. This magnetic field causes an armature 4 to shift toward a pole face 3 of the electromagnet 2 against the return force of a return spring and contact this pole face at a second operating position. The armature 4 is held at a second operating position, while power supply is maintained. In this case, a return spring 8 is compressed in accordance with an operation stroke. In the case of an electromagnetic actuator 1, a sensor 13 for sensing a force is caused to support the return spring 8 and detect the return force of the return spring 8 which changes at the time of armature shift.
