PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound having high safety, active even by oral use and useful as an excellent liver disease treating agent. ;SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R¹ and R² are each H, a lower alkyl or the like; R³ and R⁴ are each H, a lower alkyl or the like; R^5a and R^5b are each H, a lower alkyl or the like; R⁶ is H or the like; X is oxygen or the like; here, all of R¹, R² and R³ can not be acyl groups at the same time), preferably, 3, 4-dihydroxy-6-methoxy-2, 2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran or the like. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by reducing a compound of formula II (e.g. 4-hydroxy-6-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran-3-one) in an inactive solvent such as tetrahydrofuran with a reducing agent such as lithium aluminum hydride.
