PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare an agent capable of effectively preventing or treating diseases in hepatic functions without any risk or fear of adverse effects or relapse. SOLUTION: This agent for improving hepatic functions is obtained by including an extract from Malloti Cortex (a dried bark of Mallotus japonicus Mueller- Agroviensis) as an active ingredient. The extract from the Malloti Cortex preferably contains 12-18% bergenin. The extract of the Malloti Cortex is prepared by adding 10 pts.wt. distilled water to 1 pt.wt. crude powder of the dried Malloti Cortex, heating and extracting the crude powder of the dried Malloti Cortex on a water bath at a temp. of 90-100 deg.C twice in total for 3 hr at a time, further adding 5 pts.wt. distilled water thereto, heating and extracting the crude powder of the dried Malloti Cortex on the water bath at a temp. of 90-100 deg.C at the third time for 2 hr, then filtering the extraction mixture, vacuum concentrating the resultant filtrate on the water bath and drying the concentrated filtrate.
