PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfy at concurrently both a low oscillating threshold value and a high mode matching efficiency by using a quasi-three level or three level laser medium with the laser lower level belonging to a base level group and to design in such a manner that the minimum spot radius of laser-pumping light satisfies specific equations. ;SOLUTION: A quasi-3 level or 3 level laser medium with the laser lower level belonging to a base level group is used, and design is performed in such a manner that the minimum spot radius wp0 of the laser-pumping light satisfies the equations. In the equations, M2 is M2 factor of pumping light source, λp is the wavelength of pumping light source, L is a laser medium length, (n) is the refractive index of laser medium, ηa is the absorption efficiency of pumping light, Pi is incident pumping power, (x) is an arbitrary number larger than 1, Ith is a laser-oscillating threshold pumping light intensity. By adjusting at least any one of the light-collecting beam shape, laser medium shape, resonator shape and output mirror transmittance in a manner which satisfies the formula, a laser of the optimum output can be designed easily.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
