PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound having low irritativity to skin and hair and having highly excellent oxidation stability, useful as a nonionic surfactant and useful for cleansers and topical preparations for use for skin. ;SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R is an 8-22C hydrocarbon group, such as octyl, lauryl, palmityl, stearyl, 2-ethylhexyl, isostearyl, capryl, oleylalcohol residue, palmitooleyl or eicosenyl). For example, dierythritolhydroxystearyl ether. The compound of formula I preferably has an HLB of 10-20. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example, by a method comprising dissolving erythritol in a nonaqueous solvent such as dimethylsulfoxide or dimethylformamide or melting the erythritol at the melting point of erythritol or higher and subsequently reacting the dissolved or melted erythritol with a compound of formula II in the presence of a catalyst.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
