PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject composition useful as a therapeutic agent or the like for the central and peripheral nervous system such as the deterioration of cells, degeneration of nerves and cell death by a recombinant DNA technology. SOLUTION: This composition is constructed from a human acidic fibrablast growth factor(FGF), having an amino acid sequence represented by the formula, produced by a recombination and having the acetylated amino terminal and the specific activity of the human acidic fibroblast FGF polypeptide is at least 0.61×105 units/mg. The acidic fibroblast FGF is obtained by transforming a yeast host cell with a DNA construct, composed of a yeast transcription promoter DNA region on the upstream side of an initiation codon, a DNA molecule coding for the human FGF having the amino acid sequence represented by the formula and a transcription terminator, having the 3'-terminal of the promoter fused to the 5'-terminal of the DNA molecule and the transcription terminator located on the downstream side of the DNA molecule and is incapable of indicating the secretion of the acidic FGF from the yeast and separating the resultant FGF from the cultured transformed yeast cell.
