PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of case where authentication/certification processing can not be executed properly by using the combination of authentication/ certificate devices. ;SOLUTION: Each of authentication devices 101-103 and certificate devices 104-106 supplies model information of its own device to other devices. Each of the authentication devices determines an authentication method corresponding to the model information of the certificate devices informed from the other devices, generates challenge data corresponding to the determined authentication method and transmits the data to the other devices. When each of the certificate devices determines a certificate method corresponding to the model information of the authentication devices informed from the other devices and receives the challenge data from the other devices, each of the certificate devices determines the certificate method corresponding to the model information of the authentication devices informed from the other devices, then uses the determined certificate method to apply certificate processing to the challenge data and generates response data and transmits the data to the other devices. Upon the receipt of the response data returned from the other devices, the authentication devices 101-103 authenticate the response data.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
