PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To evaluate actual shielding performance of UV-ray by measuring the transmission characteristics of UV-rays directly and conveniently when a measured object e.g. a cosmetic, is provided on a basin body, e.g. the skin. ;SOLUTION: A linear light, i.e., a monochromatic UV-rays, is made incident into a measured object provided on a basic body having an inherent optical reflectance from the object side and the intensity of scattering reflected light is measured in order to determine the scattering reflectance of the object on the basic body. Simultaneous equations of a function between the intensity of transmitted light and the intensity of scattering reflected light, i.e., an expression representative of the variation rate of transmitted light in the thickness direction of the object, determined while taking account of the fact that the transmitted light and the reflected light comprises a linear light component and a scattering light component, respectively, and an expression representative of the variation rate of the scattering light are solved for the intensity of transmitted light and the intensity of scattering reflected light. The UV-ray transmittance of the object on the basic body is then determined from the inherent UV-ray reflectance of the basic body and the UV-ray scattering light reflectance of the object on the basic material using a solution obtained as a function of the thickness of the object.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
