PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a duplicate image detector that detects accurately and surely a duplicate field in a video signal through inverse telecine transform and the image converter or the like that is provided with the duplicate image detector and converts an image. SOLUTION: In the case of detecting a duplicate field in a digital telecine signal Strd obtained by applying telecine transform to a movie resource, as to the luminance of each pixel included in two consecutive fields of a same phase in the digital telecine signal Strd, absolute values of differences of the luminance between corresponding pixels in the two fields are summed as to all pixels included in one field to calculate a sum of the absolute values. Then a constant larger than 0 and less than the unity is respectively multiplied with the absolute value sum corresponding to a field displayed just before and with the absolute value sum corresponding to a field displayed just after with respect to the time base. In the case that the absolute value sum with which the constant value is multiplied is larger than the absolute value sum of a field between the fields just before and just after, the inbetween field is discriminated to be a duplicate field and a flag signal Sf is outputted.
