PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new complex compound comprising a transition metal complex containing at least one (substituted) pentalene ligand coordinated on only one single metal atom and useful for catalysts for polymerizing olefins, especially ethene, and so on. ;SOLUTION: A new complex compound having at least one transition metal atom, containing at least one (substituted) pentalene ligand coordinated on only one single metal atom and represented by formula I [M1 is a metal atom belonging to the group III to the group IV; R1 is H or methyl; X is a halogen, an alkyl, an aryl or H; Y is THF, an amine, a phosphane or CO; Z is cyclopentadienyl, indenyl or the like; (k) and (r) are each 0, 1 or 2: (m) is 0, 1, 2 or 3], formula II (R2 is the same as R1) or the like. The new complex compound is useful for olefin polymerization catalysts or the like. The compound is obtained by allowing a transition metal compound having a halogeno group and a (substituted) cyclopentadienyl or indenyl ligand to react with a (substituted) pentalene dianion capable of being replaced by the ligand.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
