PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a low price superconducting unit in which the size and the running cost is reduced while enhancing a energy utilization rate by providing a cooling system employing a liquefied gas principally comprising a methane gas as a coolant. ;SOLUTION: An inner tank 12 is set in an outer tank 11 in order to contain liquid helium 13 and a superconducting machine 14 being immersed into the liquid helium and cooled. The space between the inner and outer tanks 12, 11 is then evacuated to form a vacuum thermal insulation layer 15 in which first, second and third thermal shields 16-18 are arranged sequentially from the outside while surrounding the inner tank 12. Coolant piping 24 is arranged on the substantially entire outer surface of the first thermal shield 16 while being coupled thermally therewith. The coolant piping 24 has one end 25 coupled with a liquefied natural gas supply principally comprising methane and the other end 26 coupled with a natural gas collection system.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
