PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To limit time jitter owing to collision between solitons by exchanging the wavelengths of two channels in such a manner that a signal transmitted with a certain wavelength from an upper half is transmitted by a signal transmitted a certain wavelength from a lower half. ;SOLUTION: A wavelength allocation system which compensates that the bit transmission time of various channels is synchronized or is pseudo- synchronized in a fixed period ZR is used. Plural repeaters 21 to 2m are provided along a transmission system and channels are exchanged between each pair of adjacent repeaters at a place with the same distance from the respective repeaters. The transmission system also includes plural channel exchanges 31 to 3m. For instance, each device exchanges all of the channels of a multiple signal by transmitting a signal received in the channel of a wavelength λ1 in a wavelength λn+i+1 and also making all values in which (i) is possible from 1 to (n) to be transmitted in such a way. For instance, when (n) is an even number, each channel transmitted in a wavelength of the lower half is transmitted in a wavelength of the upper half.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
