PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the occurrence of the tilt of a cutter post until the completion of the construction of one zone by applying the constitution that an endless chain is made to circulate in the descending direction of a zone positioned forward of the travel direction of a trench excavation device across the cutter post at the time of the travel of the device, and the lower end of the cutter post is kept below the lower end thereof observed at the time of the previous travel when the device is traveling. ;SOLUTION: During the travel of a trench excavation device 1, an endless chain 3 is circulated in the descending direction of a zone positioned forward of a travel direction across a cutter post 2. Also, during a plurality of times of the travels of the trench excavation device 1, the lower end of the cutter post 2 is kept below the lower end thereof observed during the previous travel. As a result, cutting and agitation claw 4 passing along the lower end of the cutter post 2 scrapes a subsoil in a direction opposite to the travel direction of the trench excavation device 1. In addition, the cutter post 2 can be made to travel at a constant speed only by causing the upper end thereof to move in a travel direction.
