PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a filter device capable of peeling off clogged filter media being a precoating agent over the whole surface of the ceramic cylinder in back washing, thereby performing the filtration in a degree suitable for a drinking water with a small sized ceramic cylinder and to recover a filter media from a waste water the back washing. SOLUTION: The axis of the ceramic cylinder 14 is horizontally arranged so that back washing water is passed over the whole length of the ceramic cylinder 14 from the inside of the ceramic cylinder 14 to the outside at the time of back washing. At the time of back-washing the ceramic filter device in which the axis of the ceramic cylinder 14 is horizontally arranged, the back washing water is passed through from the inside of the ceramic cylinder to the outside, the waste water obtained by back-washing the ceramic filter device is introduced to a cyclone and a solid material (filter media) is separated from the waste water with the cyclone operated.
