Spray-cooled modular sidewall assembly for arc furnace

Side-wall assembly for an electric arc furnace comprises a number of hollow side-wall segments (22a-g) assembled together and supported by the furnace to form at least a portion of a side-wall for surrounding at least one graphite electrode (20) extending downward into the furnace. Each segment has inner (100a-g) and outer (200a-g) metal members joined together to form an enclosed space with at least one outer liquid drain in its lower portion. A number of sprays are located within the space at given points near to and spaced from the inner member for directing a spray of liquid coolant in the form of droplets against the inner member to keep it at an acceptable temperature. A liquid coolant supply header (400a-g) is fixed within the space and extends across the inner member for supplying liquid to the spray means and at least one coolant drain outlet joins the drain opening for the flow of liquid coolant from inside the space. A liquid supply pipe (350) supplies liquid to a header of one of the segments and a number of detachable pipes (500) outside the segments connect in tandem the supply headers of the segments. Means are provided for removably engaging adjacent side-wall segments. A drain line outside the segments withdraws the coolant from the segments. Also claimed is another embodiment of a side-wall assembly for an electric arc furnace.
