DESULFURIZATION OF COAL, HEAVY OIL, CRUDE OIL, ORINOCO TAR OR POLYMER IN PRESENCE OF ACID CATALYST

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To desulfurize an organic substance resource such as coal, heavy oil, Orinoco tar or sulfur-containing waste plastics by treating the sulfur- containing resource in the presence of a catalyst and a liquid hydrocarbon at a relatively low temperature at a low pressure. SOLUTION: This method for the desulfurization comprises treating a compound having carbon-carbon bonds as the basic bonds and further containing one or more sulfur atoms therein (preferably coal, heavy oil, crude oil, Orinoco tar or polymer) in the presence of a catalyst comprising trifluoromethane sulfonic acid, hydrogen fluoride, or hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride, and a liquid hydrocarbon (e.g. an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene or xylene) at a temperature of 50-250 deg.C and at a pressure of 2-8 Mpa. A part of the product is preferably subsequently added to a liquid hydrocarbon to continue the treatment. The catalyst is preferably used in an amount of 5-6 kg and the liquid hydrocarbon in an amount of 1.7-2.0 kg per kg of the coal.
