PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a long service life hard film-covered roller or hard film- covered metal mold which is excellent in abrasion resistance and oxidation resistance by specifying an average value of the length/breadth ratio of a crystal particle size forming a hard film. ;SOLUTION: A (Ti, Al) N hard film having a thickness of about 2 μm is formed on a cemented carbide base body surface mainly composed of WC and Co under a film forming condition where bias voltage is about 20 to 200 V and film forming pressure is about 0.5 to 3 Pa and a base body (base board) temperature is about 525°C by an ion plating device of a cathode arc method to manufacture mill type cutting tool. A cuttable distance when an average value of the ratio (a/b) of the longitudinal directional crystal particle size (a) to the lateral directional crystal particle size (b) of the (Ti, Al) N film of this end mill type cutting tool is 1 to 7, exceeds 10mm and an excellent cutting characteristic is imparted. When the lateral directional crystal particle size (b) is 0.1 to 0.4 μm, the cuttable distance becomes 20 m or more.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
