PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily detoxify a gas containing harmful materials such as dioxin and gaseous SO2 which is difficult to do up to now. SOLUTION: This method of detoxifying harmful materials in flue gas comprises of the following processes including a process in which harmful material-containing waste gas discharged from an incinerator is forcibly made to introduce into a first washing tank 4 by a jet current of water solution of a symbiotic bacteria group of anaerobes and aerobes at the horizontal end part of a flue in which a highest part thereof is horizontally extended and the extended end is extended downward, a process in which by a contact means sufficient contact of the harmful material with the water solution of the symbiotic bacteria group of anaerobes and aerobes is made in the first washing tank 4, a process in which the water solution treated in the former process is carried to a second washing tank 5, a process in which by a contact means sufficient contact of the residual harmful materials with the water solution of the symbiotic bacteria group of the anaerobes and the aerobes is made in the second washing tank 5, and a process in which, if necessary, the treated water solution is carried to a third or more washing tanks and by a contact means sufficient contact of the harmful materials with the water solution of the symbiotic bacteria group of the anaerobes and the aerobes is made.
