PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject fraction from feed of a cracked naphtha by desulfuring the sulfur-containing feed fraction in a first reaction zone to provide an intermediate product, contacting gasoline boiling range portion of the intermediate product with a catalyst of acidic functionality, and extracting the product. ;SOLUTION: A sulfur-containing feed fraction is contacted with a hydrodesulfurization catalyst in a first reaction zone and operated under a combination of elevated temperature, elevated pressure and at atmosphere comprising hydrogen to produce an intermediate product comprising a normally liquid fraction which has a reduced sulfur content and a reduced octane number as compared to the feed. The gasoline boiling range portion of the intermediate product is contacted with a catalyst of acidic functionality to convert the portion to an effluent comprising a fraction boiling in the gasoline boiling range having a higher octane number than the gasoline boiling range fraction of the intermediate product, and the objective benzene, toluene and an 8C aromatic compound is extracted from the effluent while forming as a by-product, a gasoline boiling range product in the method for producing the benzene, toluene and xylene from FCC naphtha.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1999,JPO
