PURPOSE: To provide a dry operated gas seal cooling device and method for decreasing the temperature of a seal ring and extending its service life. ;CONSTITUTION: A dry operated gas seal includes a fixed seal ring carrier 14 for holding a fixed seal ring 16, a rotary seal ring carrier 18 facing the fixed seal ring 16 for holding a rotary seal ring 22, a fluid scoop 26 located on the radial outside and extended to the rotary seal ring carrier 18, and a heat exchanger 32 in fluid communication with a scoop 26. A portion of gas is trapped by the scoop 26, transferred to the heat exchanger 32 where it is cooled, and returned to a high pressure region adjacent to the seal.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
