PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a lightweight head cylinder capable of easily being made small, light and saving electric power consumption by making at least either one of a rotating cylinder and a fixed cylinder in a head cylinder for winding a magnetic tape of an Mg base alloy containing a specific concn. of Mg. ;SOLUTION: The magnetic tape is wound around the outer peripheral part of the head cylinder consisting of the rotating cylinder and the fixed cylinder, and magnetic recording the play-back are executed through a magnetic head fitted to the rotating cylinder. In this magnetic recording and play-back device, at least one side of the above cylinders is made of the Mg base alloy containing 11 wt.% Mg desirably ≥50%, further desirably ≥80%, with inevitable impurities. Further, it is desirable to prevent the oxidation, corrosion, wear, etc., on the surface by applying a chemical conversion treatment, anode oxidizing treatment, nitriding treatment, etc., on the sliding surface of this head cylinder with the tape.
