PURPOSE: To provide a method for converting a macrocyclic polyimide oligomer to a straight-chain polyimide which can convert macrocyclic polyimide oligomer to an advantageous straight-chain polyimide through ring-opening polymn. by heating a compsn. contg. a macrocyclic polyimide oligomer together with a primary amine in the presence of a macrocyclic polyimide polymn. catalyst in a specified temp. range. ;CONSTITUTION: A compsn. (C) contg. a macrocyclic polyimide oligomer represented by the formula [wherein A1 represents a monocyclic or polycyclic arom. group; R1 represents an org. group or bis(alkylene)polydiorganosiloxane; and n is at least 1] is heated together with a primary amine (B) {pref. stearylamine or 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane} pref. under pressure at about 300 to 350°C in the presence of a macrocyclic polyimide polymn. catalyst (A) (pref. an alkaline earth metal, a transition metal, a salt thereof or the like, still pref. a carboxylate of a transition metal) to perform conversion into a straight-chain polyimide. The amt. of the component A used is pref. about 0.5 to 1.0 mol.% based on the component C, and the amt. of the component B is pref. about 1 to 10% based on the component C.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1995,JPO
